A vote of confidence, in the Lord

The nation is being bombarded with a multitude of provocative 'last words ' as Politicians prepare themselves, and us, for what the election in June will accomplish.

We all hear the same message, but the meaning is translated through the filter of each different personality and political inclination. I recollect the last words of Admiral Horatio Nelson. There are 2 possible renderings. Did he say 'Kiss me, Hardy', or were his words 'Kismet, Hardy'?

Concerning the election, are we aware that some politicians will face a final farewell? Kiss me goodbye!

For all of us Kismet - fate - requires us to be optimistic about an unknown future. In one of the Primary classes I taught, at the end of a fraught afternoon I said to one child, "Come back tomorrow with some sense." He never came back. He stepped into the road without looking and was killed by a speeding car. I regret those words; spoken without care.

Now, as I consider the importance of the elections, I realise that many politicians will not come back and that their promises and future intentions will be crossed out in the voting booths. It is essential that we vote with careful consideration; much depends on what happens as a result of these elections.

The Bible gives this advice in the 1st Letter of Timothy,

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good...'"

We are sometimes cynical about last words. Free Press printed a selection of political statements made by different candidates. I quote three of them.

'Campaigning on local issues.'

'A party which is on your side.'

'Priority funds for social care.'

Only time will validate these last words ! In the affairs of humanity; past, present ,and future. God has the final word. God alone is unfailingly dependable, accurate and continually kind. Consider this verse from the book of Proverbs.

'Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding .In all your ways acknowledge Him and He WILL make your paths straight.'
